Funeral service for Elton Floyd VanScoder, age 99, of Tipton, Oklahoma will be at 1:30 p.m., January 15, 2018, at Tipton Church of Christ with Ken Waugh officiating. Burial will follow in the Frederick Memorial Cemetery under the direction of Jackson Funeral Home of Frederick. Mr. VanScoder passed away peacefully Thursday, January 11, 2018, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
Elton Floyd VanScoder was born on February 22, 1918, to Silas Floyd and Gracie Odessa VanScoder in Frederick, Oklahoma. He attended Pleasant Valley Elementary School and graduated from Chickasha High School in 1936. In 1939, Elton began working as a boys' supervisor at the Tipton Children's Home. He later was employed by Southwestern Trailways to drive buses between Oklahoma City and Altus Air Force Base. He proudly served his country in the United States Army during World War II. After his service in the military, Elton married his sweetheart, Lura Fay Forsyth, on April 28, 1946, in Tipton, Oklahoma. They were blessed with two daughters, Donna Ruth and Nancy Jean VanScoder. Elton later attended Southwestern State University in Stillwater and then Cameron University in Lawton where he graduated with a BS Degree in Accounting. Elton and Lura Fay owned and operated the Tipton Hardware and Plumbing Company for many years. In 1977, he accepted employment as an accountant at the Tipton Children's Home until his retirement in 1984. Later, he volunteered as a reading tutor, delivered Meals on Wheels and served with Jackson County Hospice. Elton and Lura Fay enjoyed mentoring two young men, Christopher Clark and Robert Blankenship when they resided at the Tipton Children's Home. He was a faithful member of the Tipton Church of Christ where he served as a deacon and was a dedicated Bible School teacher.
He is survived by two daughters, Donna VanScoder Carlton and her husband Casey and Nancy VanScoder Brooks; two grandchildren, Sarah Brooks Rhoads and Timothy Brooks and his wife Valerie; one nephew, Craig Hasty and his wife Janice; two great nieces, Cameron Hasty and Carly Allred; two great nephews, Connor Hasty and Stephen Allred; and numerous cousins.
Elton was preceded in death by his parents; his devoted wife of sixty-nine years, Lura Fay VanScoder; one brother, Lauren VanScoder; his step-mother, Myrtle VanScoder; his sister-in-law, Addie Ruth Hasty; his brother-in-law, James Hasty, his niece, Pamela Hasty Allred; and son-in-law, Robert Brooks.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Tipton's Children's Home, P.O. Box 370, Tipton, Oklahoma 73570, in memory of Elton Floyd VanScoder.
