Obituary

Funeral service for Freeda June Lewis, age 92, of Frederick will be at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, February 18, 2015 at the First Baptist Church with Dr. Tony Nickel officiating. Burial will follow in the Frederick Memorial Cemetery under the direction of Jackson Funeral Home. Mrs. Lewis passed away on Sunday, February 15, 2015 at her home. Freeda June Washburn Lewis was born on October 10, 1922 in Loveland, Oklahoma to Samual and Maude (Greer) Washburn. She attended elementary school at Loveland and graduated from Grandfield High School. Freeda married Jack Clyde Lewis on August 15, 1947, in Rossville, Georgia and together they raised five children. They were married 59 years until his death in 2006. Freeda graduated from Draughon's Business School in Wichita Falls after high school. She worked as a receptionist during World War II at the Air Defense Plant in Wichita, Kansas, Douglas Air Base in Oklahoma City and Frederick Air Base in Frederick. While working in Wichita, Kansas, Freeda played Semi-Professional Women's Basketball for the Kansas League and traveled throughout the U.S. She was known as a "Stealth" player and was voted Most Beautiful Player" in the Kansas City Play-Off Championship. Freeda's Grandpa nicknamed her "Pete" when she was a small child and that nickname stuck with her throughout her life. Her legacy lives on in a book written and published by her granddaughter, Lori Karpe, in "A Girl Named Pete." Freeda was a devoted member of the First Baptist Church in Frederick. She was a member of Eastern Star and served as Worthy Matron. In her early years, she taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. Freeda left a cherished legacy to her family through her Christian faith, love for family and love for her country. She loved traveling with her brothers and sisters and enjoyed playing cards with her family. Freeda's home was the center of fun holiday family gatherings. She was a devoted housewife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was known for her beautiful smile and kind ways. She is survived by three sons, Emmett Lewis and wife Donna of Rowlett, Texas, Mike Lewis and wife Suzanne of Gordonville, Texas, Keith Lewis and wife Amber of Frederick; two daughters, Jackie Cain of Frederick and Donna Hathaway and husband Gary of Walters, Oklahoma; one brother, Jimmy Washburn and wife Barbara of Moyers, Oklahoma; one sister, Sammie Ladd and husband James of Grandfield, Oklahoma; six grandsons, Todd Little and wife Angelique of Saginaw, Texas, Chad Lewis of Dallas, Texas, Craig Lewis and wife Sara of McKinney, Texas, Sam and Josh Lewis of Frederick and John Clements and wife Jennifer of Frisco, Texas; four granddaughters, Lori Karpe and husband Chuck of Lindsay, Lisa Dodd and husband Johnny of Walters, Natalie Howard and husband Doug of Norman and Angie Nowell and husband Matt of Wylie, Texas; twelve great-grandchildren, Olivia, Jake and Vivian Little, Keller and Hudson Howard, Quaid, Jill and Chase Ogletree, Karson and Jack Dodd, Addison and Cash Clements along with numerous nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her husband; one brother, Wayne Washburn; three sisters, Lamoin Buckner Speck, Wyvonna French and Margie Reid; one son-in-law, Bruce Little; two nephews, Wally Reid and Tommy Buckner; one niece, Alanna Tennessen; and her parents, Sam & Maude Washburn.
