Obituary

Graveside Service for Guy Clifford Collins, Jr., age 93, of Frederick, Oklahoma will be at 2:00 P.M., Friday, February 28, 2025, at the Frederick Memorial Cemetery with Eddie Whitworth officiating. Burial will follow under the direction of Jackson Funeral Home. Mr. Collins passed away Saturday, February 22, 2025, at his home, surrounded by his loved ones.

Our father was born at home in Haskell, Texas, the only son of Nina Nance Collins and Guy Clifford Collins.  In the fullness of time his family included three sisters, Nance, Sue and Julie, two doting maternal aunts, numerous uncles and many other family members charmed by the handsome, blue-eyed, rare Collins boy.  Soon he was known fondly as Bo, and eventually Bodie.

His family moved whenever his father's job changed.  His mother would reminisce about him coming home from school every day with a bloody nose.  Every day.  We are sure the other kid had it much worse.  He loved and admired his mother dearly.  As a young teenager he would work the farms of his sisters' families, of course hitchhiking to Kansas or the Texas panhandle. Hitchhiking was so common to him that it was hard to convince him to stop helping out a highway stranger.  When the family moved to Ft. Worth, one of his after school jobs was to caddy for the members at the Colonial Golf Course.  He loved to watch the professionals play the course on television each season.

The family returned to Haskel, Texas, and his father's health declined before he had a chance to finish high school.  His family, his mom and young sister, needed him to provide and he did.  He was working at the corner drug store as a soda jerk when a local telephone operator caught his eye and soon he and Freddie Frierson were married.  That marriage flourished and from the union five children were born, Nina Catherine, Guy Clifford III, Julie Jane, Jana Gayle, and Edward Nance.  Bodie and Freddie lived most all of their married lives in Frederick.

Bodie was a Tom's man.  He was spotted in the drug store by a Tom's distributor and offered a single Tom's route. He told the man he didn't have a dime to contribute, so they offered him the deal on commission. He moved his family to Graham to see if he had what it took. As it turned out, he had that business sense, common sense, and along with it, a work ethic for success.  Soon he was offered a distributorship that would eventually be one of the largest in the United States.  At the height of Tom's sales distribution, Bodie was consistently in the Top 10 of all Tom's distributors in the nation.  And it all started with not a dime to his name.

Boy Scouting is a program close to his heart.  He strongly believed the skills taught in the program were necessary for a young man to be well-rounded.  Did he know and use all those knots?  Yes, he did and he knew you should too. For years he took hundreds of Tillman County young men on weekend camping trips to the Red River and week-long trips to Camp George Thomas. He even took his own kids camping, which was not always quite as smooth. We can attest that his buried peach cobbler is the best thing we ever ate.

In 1969, Bodie was named Frederick's Most Useful Citizen for his work with Troop 288, Frederick Boy Scouts.  He also served on the Frederick City Council for several years, working to establish Lake Frederick and improve the Frederick Police Department.

He will always be known as a man of integrity, who lived each day with the respect of others and the love and respect of every member of his family.

He is survived by his children, Julie Jane Collins Tyler (Gary), Jana Collins Cobb, Edward Nance Collins (Cindy); his sister, Julia Collins Cathey; his grandchildren, Geromy Allen Schrick, Justin Wade Schrick, Zachary Jace Schrick, Kristen Gayle Pineda, Matthew Dylan Tyler, Bret Edwin Tyler, Robert Todd Tyler, Keri Ann Collins Gaytan, Katie Lynn Collins Haston, Phil Cobb, Laura Catherine Collins, and Garrett Edward Collins. He is also survived by many great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Freddie Frierson Collins, a daughter, Nina Catherine Collins Schrick, and a son, Guy Clifford Collins, III, and a son-in-law, Phillip Wayne Cobb.
