Obituary

Janie Harper Gilley passed away suddenly on Saturday, August 10, 2024. Janie, a native of Frederick, OK, was born on September 16, 1950, into the loving arms of Bob and Patsy Harper. Janie attended Frederick Public Schools, grades 1-12, graduating in 1968. She enrolled at the University of Oklahoma, where she graduated four years later in 1972 with a bachelor's degree in Elementary Education. Janie was hired by Tulsa Public Schools in 1972 and spent her entire teaching career of 29 years there.

Janie was a skilled pianist. She began her piano lessons around the age of 6 under the tutelage of her great-grandmother, Marion Wilson. After Marion's passing, Janie continued with piano lessons until she graduated from high school. Janie initially wanted to obtain her college degree in Music, but changed to Education after being asked, "what are your career plans with a music degree?" Janie was a dog lover her whole life. She always had at least one dog in her home, and most times, more than one. Janie married Tom Gilley on July 14, 2001. They lived in Henderson County, Texas. The last 2 years, Janie had been the singular caregiver to her husband. As with any role Janie took on, she went above and beyond in the caretaker role, with love in her heart and no thoughts about her own needs.

Survivors include her husband, Tom, of the home; two sisters, Lisa Harper (Trish Pruitt) of Catoosa, OK and Sara Sanger (Craig) of Norman, OK; her beloved dog, Tootsie, along with many cousins, and a multitude of friends.

Per Janie's wishes, only a private graveside service will be held. If you would like to donate in Janie's memory, your local dog rescue or humane society would be a welcomed gift, or to any charity of your choice
