Funeral service for Jean Howell Polk age 81 of Frederick, Oklahoma will be at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, May 31, 2022, at the Jackson Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Lisa Beavers officiating. Burial will follow in the Frederick Memorial Cemetery under the direction of Jackson Funeral Home. Jean passed away Sunday morning, May 29, 2022, at the Memorial Nursing Center in Frederick.
Jean Howell Polk was born November 24, 1940, in Frederick, Oklahoma, to Lloyd Alfred and Dorothy Marguerite (Hazlett) Smith. She attended Frederick Public Schools, graduating from Frederick High School in 1959. Jean attended Cameron University for one year, prior to her marriage to Carl Eugene "Choppy" Howell on December 23, 1960, in Frederick, Oklahoma. She later returned to Cameron where she received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education, and then her Master's Degree from Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford, Oklahoma.
Jean taught for 27 years in the Frederick Public Schools System. She taught 6th Grade Math, 4th Grade English, Migrant Education, and coached Girls Basketball for several years. She retired in 1998, from teaching 2nd Grade for many years. Jean had previously been selected as Frederick Teacher of the Year, Master Migrant Teacher of the Year, and was nominated as one of the top five finalists for the State Teacher of the Year. In April of 1998, she was united in marriage to James Ray Polk in Gainesville, Texas. Jean was a faithful member of the First United Methodist Church; a passionate bridge player, and an avid OU Sooner fan.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Carla and Randy Loveday of Frederick, Oklahoma; her son, Jeff Howell of Frederick, Oklahoma; her granddaughters, who were her pride and joy, Lindsey Loveday of Edmond, Oklahoma, Delanie Howell of Enid, Oklahoma, Deighton Howell of Edmond, Oklahoma, and Dannyn Howell of Wynnewood, Oklahoma; her great-granddaughter, Evelyn "Evie" Howell of Enid, Oklahoma; her half-sister, Robe Mourer of Tipton, Oklahoma; her sister-in-law, Peggy Burrow of Denison, Texas; and a host of nieces, and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her grandmother who she loved dearly, Willie Bell Colyer; and both of her husbands, Choppy Howell who preceded her in death on October 25, 1990; and James Ray Polk who preceded her in death on June 25, 2015.
Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church in memory of Jean Howell Polk.
