Graveside service for Joan Gayle Akin age 73, of Frederick, Oklahoma will be at 10:00 A.M., Thursday, June 7, 2018, at the Fairlawn Cemetery, Snyder, Oklahoma with Keith Dill officiating. Inurnment will follow under the direction of Jackson Funeral Home. Mrs. Akin passed away Monday, June 4, 2018, at her home.
Joan Gayle (Ellis) Akin was born December 3, 1944, in Snyder, Oklahoma to Joe Myers and Geneva Lee (Hodson) Ellis. She attended Snyder Public School, graduating from Snyder High School in 1962. She later attended Cameron State Agriculture College where she received an Associate Degree in Arts and Science on May 29, 1964. Joan later attended Oklahoma State University in Stillwater and then transferred to Southwestern State University in Weatherford where she received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education on May 24, 1968. On May 2, 1969, she and Thomas Hugh Akin were united in marriage at Seymour, Texas. She later received her Master's Degree in Education on July 31, 1970. Tom preceded her in death on December 12, 1978. She began her teaching career at Snyder Elementary where she taught for one year before transferring to Frederick where she taught second grade for over 36 years. She retired in 2004. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Frederick.
She is survived by one daughter, Jolee Akin Doucet of the home; one son, Hugh Marshall Akin of the home; one grandson, Thomas Paul Doucet of the home; one sister, Nilda Ellis Rodriguez of Lawton, Oklahoma, niece and nephews, Jaye R. Keepers, Anthony Ellis Rodriguez, and Anna Maria Rodriguez and four great-nieces and nephew.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Joe and Geneva Ellis; and her husband, Tom Akin.
