Funeral service for Johnny Lee Powell, age 89, of Frederick, Oklahoma, will be at 10:30 a.m., on Thursday, May 19, 2022, at the Jackson Funeral Home Chapel with son-in-law, Rev. Kevin Baker officiating. Burial will follow in the Frederick Memorial Cemetery under the direction of Jackson Funeral Home. Mr. Powell passed away on Monday, May 16, 2022, in Colbert, Oklahoma.
Johnny Lee Powell was born June 4, 1932, in Hollis, Oklahoma to John Henry and Mary (Rivers) Powell. He attended Gould Public Schools, graduating from Gould High School with the Class of 1951. He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. On March 17, 1953, he and Frances Ann Owen were united in marriage in Eldorado, Oklahoma. The Powells spent 56 wonderful years together.
Johnny and Frances worked hard their entire lives, mostly in the grocery business. In 1967, they moved from Hobart to Frederick where they established and owned Coy's Discount Food where Johnny worked until retirement. Johnny taught his children how to work hard in the business and employed a number of teenagers in the community over the years. He truly enjoyed working with his customers. Some of his customers may fondly remember him as "Mr. Coy".
When not at the grocery store you could find Johnny on the golf course, even teaching all his sons-in-law the game. He loved spending time with his family and friends and watching sports. Johnny leaves behind a legacy of children, grandchildren, and 13 precious great-grandchildren who brightened his days until the very end.
He is survived by one son, Keith Powell of Frederick, Oklahoma, and his fiancée, Lori Wilford; three daughters, and sons-in-law, Teresa and Andy Perry of Colbert, Oklahoma, Meri Kayla and Kevin Baker of Altus, Oklahoma, and Karla and Brian Schrick of Montrose, Colorado; twelve grandchildren, Audri Edwards and her husband Jeff of Yukon, Oklahoma, Amber McClure and her husband David of Apache, Oklahoma, Michelle Thrasher and her husband Jeff of Frisco, Texas, Stephanie Rumbaugh and her husband Joe of Prosper, Texas, Melissa Jenkins and her husband Ben of Prosper, Texas, Jennifer Stockett and her husband Clayton of Midlothian, Texas, Jonathan Baker of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Josh and Jordyn Baker of Altus, Oklahoma, Karleigh Conway and her husband Tyler of Waco, Texas, Rachel Schrick of Costa Mesa, California, and Quinn Schrick and his wife Erin of Phoenix, Arizona; and thirteen precious great-grandchildren. He is also survived by one sister, Vida Lee of Wichita Falls, Texas; and a brother-in-law, Charlie Lynn of Vernon, Texas.
He is preceded in death by his parents Henry and Mary Powell; his wife, Frances Powell who preceded him in death on May 9, 2009; two brothers, Gene Powell and Billy Powell; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Viola and Troy Drury, Velma and Leroy West, and Vona and Kenneth Davis; and a sister-in-law, Marion Lynn.
Memorial contributions may be made to the donor's choice in memory of Johnny Lee Powell.
The family will receive friends and family on Wednesday, May 18, 2022, at the Jackson Funeral Home Chapel, 921 W. Gladstone Avenue, Frederick, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.
