Obituary

Funeral service for former Davidson resident Juanita Laverne Reed age 101, of Stroud, Oklahoma will be at 11:00 a.m., Friday, April 14, 2023, at the Jackson Funeral Home Chapel, 921 West Gladstone Avenue, Frederick, Oklahoma with Rev. Gérard Nsabimana officiating.  Burial will be follow in the Davidson Cemetery under the direction of Jackson Funeral Home of Frederick.  Mrs. Reed passed away Saturday, April 8, 2023, at the Stroud Healthcare Center – South in Stroud, Oklahoma.

Juanita Laverne (Parker) Reed was born on June 2, 1921, in Marietta, Oklahoma to Kester David "K.D." and Mary Matilda (Bacon) Parker.  Juanita attended Victory Consolidated #11 School, graduating from Victory High School in 1938.  She later attended Cameron State Agriculture College in Lawton, Oklahoma from 1938 to 1940. In the Fall of 1940 to 1942, she attended Southwestern State College in Weatherford, Oklahoma.  On July 31, 1941, she was united in marriage to James Carlos "Jim" Reed in Frederick, Oklahoma.  In 1942, she taught her first year at Victory Consolidated #11, where she taught, first, second, and third grades.  In 1948, she returned to Southwestern State, where she completed her Bachelor of Science Degree in Education. That same year she taught high school English at Davidson.  In 1955, she later taught for one year in the third grade, before being transferred to the second grade where she taught for 32 years. In 1988, she retired from Davidson Public Schools.

Juanita was a lifelong member of the Methodist Church in Davidson prior to their disbandment.  She later moved her membership to the First United Methodist Church in Frederick.  After she moved to Stroud, Oklahoma in 2013, she attended the Methodist Church with her daughter until her health declined.  As her children grew up, she was active in the Davidson Little League programs and was an active leader in the 4-H Club programs.  Juanita was a member of Davidson Community Center where she was active on the Building Committee for many years; she was a member of the Kappa Kappa Iota and Sigma Beta Rho.  Mrs. Reed was a member of the Oklahoma Education Association, Davidson Teacher's Association, and Tillman County Classroom Teachers.  She was nominated and received Tillman County Teacher of the Year in 1978.

Juanita was an outstanding cook.  She was well known for her fried chicken, and homemade pies, her specialties were Lemon, Coconut, and Chocolate Pies. She enjoyed the outdoors and could be seen on any day, working in her yard and garden.  Juanita was active in the town of Davidson and her family and friends were blessed to have known her for 101 years.

She is survived by two daughters, Linda Morrison and her husband Dean of Stroud, Oklahoma, and Mary Jane Poland and her husband Shawn of Okeechobee, Florida; one daughter-in-law, Dorthy Reed of Mustang, Oklahoma; one sister, Shirley Weatherred of Forney, Texas; six grandchildren, Kelley Sasser and her husband Robert of Perkins, Oklahoma, Kristy Jones and her husband Mark of Stroud, Oklahoma, Jim C. Reed and his wife Tonya of Vernon, Texas, Kyla Johnson and her husband Jeremy of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Shawnna Poland of Okeechobee, Florida, and Patrick J. Poland of Okeechobee, Florida; eight great-grandchildren, John Sasser and his wife Laramie of Perkins, Oklahoma, Emily Sasser of Stillwater, Oklahoma, Landon Johnson of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Jenna Johnson of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Eli Johnson of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Hannah Reed of Vernon, Texas, Addison Reed of Vernon, Texas, and Montana Poland of Okeechobee, Florida; and one great-great-grandson, Waylon Sasser of Perkins, Oklahoma.

She was preceded in death by her parents, K.D. and Mary Parker; her husband, Jim Reed who passed away on March 29, 1987; her son, Jim Bob Reed who passed away on April 19, 2016; and two brothers, M.B. Parker, and Otho Parker.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorial contributions may be made to the Davidson Cemetery Fund, Stroud United Methodist Church, or to the donor's choice in memory of Juanita Laverne (Parker) Reed.

The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to the staff of Stroud Health Care Center for their wonderful and diligent care of Juanita during the last ten years.
