Funeral service for rural Chattanooga resident, Lola Pearl Mefford, age 88, will be at 2:00 p.m., Wedneday, March 23, 2016 at the First Baptist Church in Chattanooga with Rev. Steve Sezate officiating. Burial will follow in the Chattanooga Cemetery under the direction of Jackson Funeral Home of Frederick. Mrs. Mefford passed away on Sunday, March 20, 2016 at a Lawton care facility.
Lola Pearl Barnes Fisher Mefford was born on July 4, 1927 in Tillman County Oklahoma to Jake and Regina (Redway) Barnes. She attended Leggett Country School through 5th grade, transferred to Loveland School for three years and then back to Chattanooga where she graduated in 1946. She was a member of Jack Creek Baptist Church where she accepted the Lord as her Savior. She married Alex Fisher on November 11, 1946, in the First Baptist Church in Altus. They moved into the Peace Church community where she became a active member. She and Alex farmed and raised chickens for eggs and freezer for their home. She helped in the fields by driving the tractor, but when Sunday came, it was church time. Alex passed away on July 31, 1980. On September 12, 1987, she married Edward (Ed) Mefford, moved in to the Chattanooga Baptist Church area becoming a member and working with women on Missions work. Ed was still farming but later retired. She still enjoyed baking cakes and cookies for different things of the community. She made a lot of pear preserves when her tree produced the pears. She and Ed loved being together, driving around to see "what the farmers were doing". Ed passed away on May 31, 2006.
She is survived by one grandson, Loren Morris of Chicago, Illinois; one granddaughter, Elizabeth Regina Sickler of Lawton; one brother Oliver Barnes of Alba, Texas; one son-in-law, Bill Sickler and his wife Angie of Lawton; nephews, Larry Barnes, his wife Cecile and family and Jerry Barnes and family; one niece Brenda Simmons and family; two step-grandsons, Terry Mefford and Kristi and his daughters, Megan and husband Kyle and Mikayla and Trent Mefford and his wife Dawn and daughters Tenley and Timber; special friends, Carri and David Carney, Debbie Mefford, Frankie Curtsinger, Martha Krasser and the Quilting Ladies of Grandfield; as well as a host of other cousins and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; both of her husbands; two brothers, Don and Lawrence Barnes; two daughters, Phylis Ann Fisher and Judy Kay Sickler; one nephew, Jason Barnes and a step-grandson; Timmy Mefford.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Oklahoma Children's Home or to the charity of the donor's choice in memory of Lola Pearl Mefford.
Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m. on Wednesday at the church in Chattanooga.
