Obituary

Funeral Service for Wesley Robert Wallis, age 91, of Lawton will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Saturday, June 6, 2015 at Jackson Funeral Home Chapel in Frederick. Military Honors & burial will follow in the Frederick Memorial Cemetery. Wesley Robert Wallis, Lieutenant Colonel, USAF (Retired) passed away on Tuesday, May 26, 2015 at the Lawton/Ft. Sill Veterans Center in Lawton, Oklahoma where he was an eight year resident. He was born Jan 13, 1924 to Glen Stanley Wallis and Edna Hickerson in Davidson, OK, he was raised in the Carnegie area graduating High School there in 1942. He was a pioneer of the space race with the Soviet Union, an accomplished marksman in pistol, a civic leader, devoted father and husband, surviving both his spouses, Macle Lue Moore, his wife of 37 years and mother of his two children, and Oleta Mae Bryant Patterson, his wife of 19 years. He served in China-Burma-India Theater of Operations as a supply clerk in the 1581st Ordinance Supply and Maintenance Company. He attended Carnegie Junior College before spending four years at Oklahoma A. & M. as a cadet in the AFROTC, earning his BS degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1951. He married Macle Lue Moore in Searcy, Arkansas, May 20, 1951. Recalled to active duty in 1951 he served in Alaska building the DEW line before returning to school to get a MS degree from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He was a Range Safety Officer during the early pioneering years at Cape Canaveral from 1958 to 1963, where he supported over 900 launches, personally detonating 35 missiles when they went dangerously astray. He also did an Education in Industry tour developing the engines for the Saturn and Lunar Orbiter which eventually put man on the moon. He retired in 1969, having served his country in uniform for 27 years. Upon retirement he designed the computer software safety systems for all missile launches at Vandenberg AFB while employed by the ITT Corporation from 1969 to November 1986. He promoted sport and hunter safety programs wherever he lived. He shot pistols competitively, representing Base teams at multi-service level matches. Joined by his wife Macle, they were principal leaders over the years with the Lompoc Rifle and Pistol Club, and the Lompoc Sportsman Association. Together they were leaders of the Lompoc Rocking Squares. He has been a member of the Lompoc Elks Club since 1970. After Macle's death at age 59, Wesley moved back to Carnegie and married Oleta Patterson in May 1989. He embraced her family and the community he had been absent from for 42 years. He was an officer of the American Legion in Carnegie. Wesley follows both his wives, his brothers, Marshall, Victor, Lellan "Dutch" Wallis; and Dutch's three children, Gary, Gaylan and Cindy; and a sister, Wynnell Jackson into the eternities. He is survived by his sister, Opal Hudson Remmert Williams (Weegie) of Hobart, OK; two children, David Wallis (Ann) of Dixon, CA and N. Gale Wallis of Port Townsend, WA; four grandchildren, Rob Wallis (Amanda) of Sacramento, CA, Rachel Wallis of Manhattan, NY, Rebecca Gale Wooden (Joshua) of Placerville, CA, and Katy Morton (Joseph) of Charlotte, NC; six great-grandchildren, Ella, Addy, Kyra, Wesley, Mason Wesley and Sadie; and many loving nieces and nephews. He is also survived by Oleta's children, Wayne Bryant, Gloria Dyer, Patti Cooper and Pam McLemoore and her grandchildren; Kim, Karla, John, David, Sarah, Amanda, Jay and Chris.
